SICO Retractable Insta-Theatre – This is pretty freaking cool. A theater that folds up into the wall and, when stored, takes up only four-and-a-half feet of depth? And then unfolds unto a normal proscenium theater with lighting rigging, tormentor curtains, and more? I think I’ve died and gone to heaven. I wonder how much it costs…
(1)Monthly Archive for November, 2008
I’m laying on the couch, looking at the beautiful lit Christmas tree, listening to the jazzy Christmas music playing and wanting to either a. drop dead/fall into a coma for three weeks or b. throw up everything I just ate. I feel like I am carrying a child in my stomach that is nine months along and am beginning to want an abortion even though I am already past the point of no return.
And there’s still dessert.
So I’m working on my very first set design. The show is called The Rented Christmas and it might possibly be one of the worst Christmas shows ever written. But that is beside the point. I’m doing light, sound, and lighting design (and I’ve appointed myself stage manager) which is definitely a haul when one person is doing it. It is fun, though.
My color scheme for the show is very warm; plenty of goldenrods and reds in traditional Christmas style. My lighting is pretty traditional since the show is pretty realistic; Roscolux Gallo Gold #316 and a to-be-determined pinkish color are the backbone of my scheme. Most of the production takes place indoors, so there isn’t that much in terms of creative freedom. Sound design is also pretty boring, too, although I never find sound design to be particularly exhilarating (we are getting a new set of wireless systems, though, which should be fun).
Sets are where it’s it. I totally went bananas at Target the other day finding set furnishings. Since the set is stationary, I can really go into details unlike a dynamic stage setting. Like lighting, my palette includes a ton of very warm reds, golds, and some brown mixed in. Here’s a sample of the set:

That’s a sample of a credenza that we’re going to have upstage; it (and by ‘it’ I mean the set of cubbies that will be turned around into, viola!, a classy credenza) will be draped with that brown fabric and the gold tray with the red mugs (in which are two special-edition Christmas bottles of Coke) and the decorative tree will be placed on top. Surrounding will be flameless battery-powered Christmas-style candles (you know the ones that people always put in their windows?) and some nutcrackers.
And that’s just a taste of the whole set; there is a lot more great décor all over the stage. I’m quite excited to put everything together. Even if the acting isn’t that great, the technical elements will be outstanding. I am sure of it. :)
D: What will we have in terms of running crew?
M: How many do yuo want?
D: I don’t care how many, I just want them to be damn good lol. There is at least one HUGE set change and tons of props that must be placed during the show.
M: Ok I’ll call Ryan.
D: Not funny. Basically, we need literate people who can follow directions. I will literally write it all down step-by-step and give them copies of everything but they need to do it right. Also in the program please credit me as:
- Tech director
- Lighting designer
- Light board op
- Sound designer
- Sound board op
- A2
- Set designer
- Set decorator
- Production manager
- Stage manager
- Web designer
I think I need to join a union lol.
M: I am officially firing you.
D: I am stressed. lol. I am a stressed, micromanaging, perfectionist, bossy tech director. As we hillary supporters used to say, be wonderful to eachother.
It seems like I spend a whole lot of time just waiting for stuff. Currently, I am waiting for:
- A shipment of new microphones
- A shipment from Gap/Old Navy full of amazing new clothes
- Thanksgiving
- and subsequently Christmas
- UHL Production Week
- My learner’s permit….seven months overdue!
- The economy to recover so that I can actually GET A JOB! (in addition to theater freelancing)
- Graduation
Alright, so the last one is like a year and a half away, but you get the picture.
I think I’m turning into some kind of creeper or something. Today in A&P we dissected a chicken bone and I took great delight in skinning the leg and examining the specimen, something that I am usually too grossed out to do in that class (but then again, we’re usually working with rodents and cats that you can recognize, as opposed to a chicken leg that you buy in the grocery store). Then, during second, third, and fourth periods today I donated blood. I was super freaked out while I was waiting to be examined and watching everything going on around me. But I was fine after I started, and I actually kind of enjoyed it. And the cool sticker and t-shirt definitely helped. My nurse’s name was Miss Tiara…like the crown. She was very entertaining, and it probably helped that I had Meredith next to me lol.
I need to stop watcing Grey’s Anatomy.
Today at 11:11 AM it was 11:11:11 11/11. This will be even more fun in three years!
Today should also have been the day that I took my driver’s test and received my license provided I had gotten my learner’s permit on May 11, 2008, the first day that I was eligible. Alas, I have not yet even applied for my permit. So therefore I have neither my permit nor my license. ‘Tis a day of mourning.
But I also killed my A&P quiz and my AP History test today. So it is a day of celebration. Un día felíz.
The calendar is bipolar.
I’m loving this song…it has a very unique sound.
Everyone is talking about me,
How my heart is broken
But they don’t see.When you’re lonely inside
The world looks so carefree.
When you’re lonely inside
You just can’t see.Does anybody want you?
Does anybody need you?
The question is
Does anybody want you?
Does anybody need you?
All I really know for certain, babe,
Is love is all there is.Every now and then there comes a time,
Someone comes along to change your mind.
You believe it’s unwise to give in to careless dreams,
You believe it’s a prize you’ll never win.You believe it’s unwise
To give in to careless dreams,
If you don’t see that is why
You will never know.
Do you think 19 pads is too many? Do I have some sort of addiction?
